Sophie B. Hawkins received formal training on the streets of New York, and for one year, at Manhattan School of Music. Her 1992 album Tongues & Tails shot her into the spotlight and established her as a singer/songwriter to be reckoned with. The album earned her a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, spawned a top five hit (Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover) and quickly went gold.

Her second album, Whaler, produced the AC hit As I Lay Me Down, which today is still the longest running single in the history of AC radio.

After leaving Sony in 2001, Hawkins established her own record label, Trumpet Swan Records. She wrote, recorded, and co-produced her first Trumpet Swan release, Wilderness, with hot producers Christian and Frank Berman (Baha Men, Real McCoy, Amber), which helps explain the unusually upbeat vibe of Wilderness. An artist usually known for her dark, brooding melodies, Hawkins has created her most universal album to date, combining pop with rock, jazz, world beat and blues.
