Kulcha
Don is no newcomer to the music scene. His career officially
started when he began traveling and performing with New York's
number one reggae sound system Down Beat.
He is one of the most charismatic and adventurous performers in
any genre. The album 'Blood Ina Me Eyes - Vengeance
(Roots Entertainment/Lightyear/WEA) displays a staggering range
of influences in its wonderfully diverse mix of reggae dancehall,
hip-hop and R&B that crosses all boundaries.
With intricate rhythms and infectious vocals, Kulcha is
before us with blood in his eyes, and an attitude that says nothing
will stop him or stand in his way. The first single 'Hot, Black
and Sexy,' remixed by New York's legendary DJ Bobby Konders, features
reggae songstress Nadine Sutherland and is firmly anchored with
the reminiscent sound of dancehall standards. The hypnotic
hip/hop remix 'Big Things' features the distinct and high-energy
flow of M.O.P. coupled with Kulcha's playful lyrics. 'MC Is My
Ambition' further explores the fusion of hip hop and dancehall's
explosive combination.
Kulcha has performed with Tupac, Shaggy, Notorious B.I.G,
Mad Lion and Salt n Pepa. C&C Music Factory
invited him to be a featured artist on two cuts on their album
and a remix featuring the reigning dancehall queen, Patra.
He collaborated with one of Jamaica's hottest dancehall artists
Spragga Benz, and they later performed together at Sting International
one of the islands biggest annual reggae shows.
After landing a recording contract with Ruffhouse/Columbia
Records, he was soon sharing the spotlight with The Fugees as
they toured to promote the album The Score.
After collaborating with them on three songs for his debut
album, which was not released, he took a self-imposed hiatus to
refocus and redirect his career. During this time EWFM,
a film and music production company in France, signed him to record
a dance album. As a result, Kulcha toured Europe extensively
capturing an international audience.
The tracks on this album compete between the deep pull of
reggae bass lines and the upbeat march of hip-hop. Alternately
offering fresh, challenging and even nasty beats, Kuclhas
vocals sway from the rapid-fire delivery of rap to the trademark
keening, singsong chants of dancehall. The provocative and often
explicit content of Kulchas lyrics are a clear reminder
that hes here to seduce. Those that blush easily, be advised,
Kulcha Don was born on Valentines Day, perhaps explaining his
dexterity in describing the lustful images that accompany his
music.
Blood Ina Me Eyes marks Kulchas debut
with Roots Entertainment, a Manhattan-based label distributed
by Lightyear/WEA and founded by Yinka Dare, a professional athlete
formerly of the New Jersey Nets. |
