| Comments: | The Januaries have been described as Bridget Bardot meets The Doors. Herb Alpert meets Shirley Manson. 60's go-go hedonism meets 21st century apocalypse. But inevitably, all descriptions end up focusing on a key trait: a simmering sensuality that lies at the core of each song on their Foodchain Records debut. Knowing that song writer Rick Boston produced the last Ricki Lee Jones record and that lyricist Debbie Diamond was once a punk band named Pink Fuzz won't do much to prepare you for what you will experience at their collective hands. The music they have fashioned together possesses all of the qualities found on any great record: killer melodies, irresistible hooks, passionate performances, memorable lyrics, soaring rhythms, as well as delicate phrasings and, of course, the piece de resistance, a tendency to make you want to listen to the album all the way through. Not since Barry White has anyone made such a concrete effort to create music that works as well in horizontal position as it does in a vertical one. |
