Monica Salmaso’s second album, Voadeira is a gem.   Out of 1,247 applicants, Monica won the 1999 Premio Visa de MPB Vocal Edition, (an important competition for young musicians created by Eldorado radio and sponsored by Visa), earning her national attention in Brazil and U.S. Brazilian communities.  Evocative, dynamic, and expressive, Voadeira is devoted to the rediscovery of Brazilian roots, traveling through a seldom inhabited repertoire of work songs, religious liturgy, folk legends, and songs from Brazil’s indigenous peoples.  Throughout this ambitious and authentic project, these poetic texts are passed through the prism of Monica’s modern interpretation and delivered with a passion that provides a cohesive and enthralling musical experience.  Voadeira is one of those rare recordings, which continues to appreciate and reward with repeated listening.  “Monica Salmaso has a gorgeous, quintessentially Brazilian voice: quietly lustrous and sustained, suffusing each liquid note with languid secrets.” – Jon Pareles, New York Times
